Kakigōri – かき氷

Shimura mejiro kakigori, strawberry kakigori, matcha green tea kakigori, sake kakigori, azuki bean kakigori, mochi kakigori, japanese dessert, japan, tokyo, japanese restaurant

Kakigōri (shaved ice) is one of my favorite Japanese desserts (being all gluten-free and vegan if you don’t add milk topping). I recently met a new friend who also is a kakigōri junkie! Lucky me she knows a lot of good places in Tokyo and we decided that we should become ”kakigōri friends” and try as many as possible 😉 The first place we went to was in Mejiro. Unlike from the typical american shaved ice (filled with artificial colors and flavors) the Japanese kakigōri is usually very top class with natural flavors and colors.

We ordered one each, I took the fresh ichigo (strawberry), my friend ordered a limited edition flavor which was some kind of sake (japanese rice wine) with soy milk. Both of them were so good and refreshing! Later on another friend joined and he ordered one with smooth red bean paste and mochi, which I had a taste of and it was super yummy too. We were sitting there and talking for a while and decided to order one more to share. Since it’s mostly ice you can easily eat two by yourself 😛 We decided to order Matcha green tea with azuki bean paste and mochi. As the Matcha lover I am this is one of my favorite flavors of kakigori!

If you go to Japan you definitely need to try kakigōri! We’ve already planned our next kakigōri date and I can’t wait! ♥

  2. I love shaved ice for dessert, but I’ve never tried the Japanese variation of it! I’d love to try it out, though, because they look amazing!

  3. Great post! It is interesting how the flavor choices vary so much by country. I saw a cafe selling Japanese shaved ice here in Bangkok. I will have to give it a try!
