Golden Gai 新宿ゴールデン街, is a small area in Shinjuku. It is located just a couple of minutes walk from the East Exit of the Shinjuku Station. Golden Gai has over 200 small bars and eateries, most of them with place for about 5-10 customers at a time. A lot of the bars have special themes, like punk rock, jazz, R&B or karaoke. Golden Gai both looks and feels very different from the otherwise busy Shinjuku. The area consists of six small streets with just two or three storey buildings. During the day Golden Gai is a very quiet area, yet during the night it’s both very busy and loud.
Until the 1950’s Golden Gai was a black market famous for prostitution. During the 1980’s the Yakuza (the Japanese maffia) burnt down a lot of buildings in Tokyo so the land could be bought up by developers. Golden Gai survived only because the owners and supporters took turns to guard the area at night.
You should definitely check out this cool and different area if you’re in Tokyo on vacation!
